The Chairs’ Hiatus

A 90-page graphic novel about music, friendship, and the cost of walking away.

[COVER IMAGE — keep as-is]

Mary and Nel were known for being close. Throughout the year they zig-zagged the country as the rock duo "The Chairs," they never spent more than a day or two apart.

That is until Mary mysteriously appears in a new city, having given up her music, fame, and friends. She wants nothing more than to work her lousy job and be left alone. The two people now standing on her doorstep have other plans.

Praise

"The Chairs' Hiatus is an intimate portrait of a musician who's lost both her music and herself, and the quiet journey back to understanding. Highly recommended."

— Maggie Stiefvater, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of the Raven Cycle

"I love this book. No other comic I've read has captured the feelings and challenges of creativity and collaboration quite like it."

— RStevens, Diesel Sweeties

"The Chairs' Hiatus is a kind of comic I'd like to see more often — a small, human story about how people hurt each other without meaning to. Matthew Bogart's intelligent, graceful cartooning is a pleasure to read."

— Barry Deutsch, author of Hereville

"Matthew Bogart's The Chairs' Hiatus is uncluttered in its story, quiet in its telling, and lovely in the time it spends with you. It illustrates its human moments by enveloping us in the larger spaces we are surrounded by."

— Anis Mojgani, 2-time National Poetry Slam champion

The Revised Edition

In 2022, I went back to this book for the first time in years. What started as a light revision became something I'm genuinely proud of: redrawn panels, tightened layouts, and a handful of new pages that land where I always wished they had. It's about five pages longer than the original.

It also comes with the Companion Book: a 28-page collection of additional Chairs comics and illustrations by me and guest artists, originally made for Kickstarter backers.

Both are available as PDF downloads for $3, or free if you're already a Patreon supporter.
