Books have landed.

Two days ago almost 800 copies of the hardback edition of The Chairs’ Hiatus that was funded by all of you on Kickstarter arrived at my door. It’s so nice to be able to type that!

Please excuse me. I need to tell you how great these things are.

Wonderful things about these books:

  • The production turned out great.
  • They are hardback books. Holly crap. Hardback!
  • They are much more substantial than the previous paperback versions.
  • They are in color at last.
  • They have a real honest to goodness ISBN number.
  • They smell really good.
  • There are 36 boxes of them! Holly cow!
  • They have two new endorsements on the back, one by R. Stevens and the other by Maggie Stievater.

I’m so happy to finally be in the home stretch of this project that I’ve been working on steadily since last July.

I’m about to leave town for two weeks, but these start going out to Kickstarter backers and anyone who wants to pre-order as soon as I get back.

Thank you all for your support. I’ll have more things to share soon.

“The Chairs’ Hiatus” is 1/2 off on ComiXology till the 1st of the year.

I’m excited to say that my graphic novel The Chairs’ Hiatus is part of the ComiXology Submit Holliday sale going on till the 1st of the year. There are lots of great comics on sale for 1/2 off if you use the code “INDIE” when you checkout. This brings The Chairs’ Hiatus down to $1.50 and includes a DRM free version as well, which is really good.

Please spread the word if you know someone who might like a copy of it.

Also, did you know I have a mailing list? It’s kinda neat!

A drawing of Mary and Nel from “The Chairs’ Hiatus”

I drew this as a reward for one of my Kickstarter backers. It’s so strange to draw on paper anymore. I also recorded a time-lapse video of me drawing it.

The Chairs’ Hiatus Companion Book

The Chairs’ Hiatus Companion Book

We’ve reached our third streatch goal, and raised enough to make some really nice looking books! Which brings me to our 4th and final stretch goal…

The Chairs’ Hiatus Companion Book

Thanks to your generosity I’m already going to be sending out PDFs of four additional comics that take place in the world of The Chairs. Since the goal of this Kickstarter was to make nice looking printed comics however it seems fitting to try and give these stories a physical home as well.

If we can reach $6,600 before the end of the Kickstarter I can print a 32 page companion to The Chairs’ Hiatus that every backer who’s getting a copy of the book will get!

It will include:

Since the story about Jen O’Neil is exclusive to backers, this book won’t be available anywhere else. If you don’t get it by backing this Kickstarter it will be gone for good. I won’t be selling it at conventions or on my site.

That’s 32 pages of new material, sized to fit in well sitting next to The Chairs’ Hiatus on your shelf.

We’ve got 10 days to reach this goal, so if you want to try and get a copy of this you’ve got to do so quickly! Let your friends know about the Kickstarter, spread the word about this last stretch goal. We can do it!

Thank you so much to everyone for the support you all have shown me. I can’t wait to start getting some of these cool things into your hands!

The Chairs’ Hiatus – Guest Post – Rick Marcks

My thanks to friend Rick Marks of Floating Dock Comics who did these two pages guest about our pals Mary and Nel to support The Chairs’ Hiatus Kickstarter.

I’m excited to say we’re almost to our reaching our next strech goal of getting five more pages of comcis, this time about how Mary and Nel met.

Also, if you’d like to hear me talk about the Kickstarter, being an indipendent cartoonist, and my attitude to Kickstarter streach goals, I had a great time on the “We Talk Comics”poscast doing just that.

Thank you so much to everyone who’s still spreading the word about the Kickstarter. We’ve got 15 more days to go before we’re out of time to make the book better and to add new comics to the rewards.

New Stretch Goal – “How we met”

We just passed our first strech goal! It looks like I’m going to be drawing a new comic about Nel! That’s great! I can’t wait to get to it. The Kickstarter is not over yet however, so…

I’ve just added a new goal!

This one is called…

“How we met.”

If we reach it I’ll draw a new five page story about when Mary and Nel met. We got a glimpse of this period in their lives in the book. If we reach this goal, I’lltell you all about it. That’s 17 pages of comics about The Chairs not available on my site!

I really hope we get to do this one. I was excited to write about this period when I was drawing the original book but it ended up being too much of a detour form the main story. Now’s our chance to make it happen!

Take a look at the Kickstarter if you haven’t yet, and please consider spreading the word about it.

Thank you to everyone! We’re going to get to make something really special!

The Chairs’ Hiatus – Guest Post – Adrian Wallace

This guest post to help support The Chairs’ Hiatus Kickstarter was done by the amazing Adrian Wallace of Jumbo Deluxe. I love his work. His beautiful color work is the reason I decided to do Oh, It’s the End of the World in color. Honestly you hold check them out

When I budgeted the Kickstarter I made sure we were raising enough to make a book that we wouldn’t be ashamed of, but we blew past that goal in just over a week, so where do we go from here?

Let’s see how nice of a book we can make!

There are all kinds of things we could do to make it really cool!  From nice thick paper, or printed endpapers, to a fancy spot UV cover the ways we could improve the book are virtually endless!

If you can help make that happen I’ve got a way to say thank you. If we reach $5,200,  (just 11 more backers), everyone who pledged above the $5 level will get a PDF of a brand new comic! This one will be about everyones favorite missing friend, NEL.  We spend so much of the main book following Mary around that we never get the chance to get to know Nel. If you can help me improve these books I’ll change that.

If that’s something you think you’d like to read, and you’d like to help make even more beautiful books you can back the project here, you can increase your pledge, or you can post about the new goal on a social network. All three help out so much!

Thank you to everyone for spreading the word so far.

Let’s see how gorgeous we can make this thing!

UPDATE: Well, that was fast!

Just a few hours after posting this we reached our first stretch goal! Way to go everybody, I get to make a new comic about Nel!

We can’t let it stop there however, so stay tuned. I’ll have a new goal shortly! (I’m pretty excited about this one.)

We did it!

I’m super excited to announce that we’ve reached our goal! We’re going to make some books! Thank you to everyone who has backed and shared links so far. I can’t believe we did all of this in a week and a day.

So what’s going to happen over the next few weeks? Well, essentially, the more we raise the nicer the books can be. We’re talking nicer paper, better covers, endpapers, the works! To try and help us make that happen, I’m announcing a…

Stretch Goal!

All backers at $5 and above are already getting two digital backup stories set in the world of The Chairs.

1. A rare four page story called “Jon” about an important character that’s mentioned in the story but never seen.

2. A new, four page story that I’m drawing exclusively for backers, about Mary and Nel’s best friend Jen O’Neil.

But! If we get to $5200…

3. I’ll draw an additional four page solo comic about Nel. This comic, like the others, won’t be posted on my site for the general public.

That’s only $400 more and everyone gets more comics and even better books. If we keep spreading the word I’m sure we can do it.

I can’t thank you all enough!

I couldn’t go without saying that yesterday, when we reached our goal, was one of the most exciting days I’ve ever had. Thank all of you so much for making that happen!

The Chairs’ Hiatus – Guest Post – Josh Shalek

My friend Josh Shalek, who does the fantastically funny comic Falling Rock National Park was kind enough to send me this guest post to help support The Chairs’ Hiatus Kickstarter. I love it and I can’t thank him enough!

If you haven’t taking a look at the project, we’re trying to create a beautiful, two color, hardback version of my comic The Chairs’ Hiatus, which you can read online for free . Don’t miss your chance to get all kinds of neat rewards that will only be available to Kickstarter backers.

Wow! What a day!

I just posted this update to my Kickstarter page, but I thought I’d share it with all of you cool tumblr folks as well!

39 Backers, $1086 raised! That’s 24% of the goal! I’m incredibly flattered by all the support everyone has given, both by backing the project in and by helping spread the word. Seriously, I told my boss at work he had to start being cruel to me to balance out everyone online was being so kind. You are all the best and I can’t thank you enough!

Here are some of the incredibly kind things you all shared yesterday:

I’ve never been so honored. Thank you! Thank you!

So, I thought I’d let you all know the plan over the next month to make these books a reality.

Periodically I’m going to post new comics and sketches by guest artists, interesting info about the creation of “The Chairs’ Hiatus”, new drawings by me, all kinds of stuff. You’ll be able to find links to them here, in these Kickstarter updates as well as on my site. It’s all cool stuff that you won’t want to miss! Please check them out and if any of it strikes your fancy or seems like something your friends might like, please pass it along.

That’s it. That’s the plan. It’s open to input. Any questions you want answered? Any rewards you want added?

A couple of awesome folks left comments about some new ideas for rewards, the logistics of which I’m going to be looking into. If you’ve got ideas or feedback I want to hear them!

By the way, one way to share the Kickstarter is to send a link to the comic itself to someone who hasn’t read it. Even if they don’t feel like kicking in, people getting something out of the comic is the ultimate goal.

Thanks everyone! More to come!
