Northwest Museum of Cartoon Arts ribbon cutting

I visited Portland’s new Northwest Museum of Cartoon Arts, a beautiful space celebrating local cartoonists. A good destination for comics fans.

Northwest Museum of Cartoon Arts ribbon cutting

A few days ago I got to attend the ribbon-cutting for the Northwest Museum of Cartoon Arts (NWMOCA) at 322 NW 8th Ave in Portland. It was great. Back in the early 2000s my friends and I actually ran a small gallery in downtown Portland, so I have some small idea how hard it is to pull off something like this. The folks behind this new museum have created a massive, beautiful space with help from a really dedicated team.

One part of the opening exhibit focused on Helioscope Studio, which was so neat to see. At the ceremony they mentioned Portland might have the highest per-capita number of cartoonists in the world.

They showed beautiful work by so many talented people, and I was honored to have some of mine included. There was even a giant print of the Jimmy Olsen cover Steve Lieber drew, and all of us who appeared in the crowd on that cover got a photo in front of it.

If you’re in Portland anytime soon and love comics, go check it out. It’s absolutely worth the visit.
